Tidewater Dockdog's Summer Splashdown at Bay Days 2013

General Information:

Tidewater Dockdogs is happy to be a part of 2013 Bay Days at downtown Hampton, VA.  This is our 2nd of three years at this venue, we are excited to be a part of the celebration.  Bay Days is a celebration of Hampton's unique relationship with the Chesapeake Bay as well as designed to raise awareness about the importance of the Clean the Bay Foundation.   The festival, in addition to featuring Dockdogs, has live music all weekend, vendors with all types of crafts and goodies, fireworks Saturday night, as well as educational booths to learn about the bay.   Those looking for a "nightlife" feel W Queen Street will be closed throughout the weekend, features one of the many stages for the event, and will have rock/blues bands playing at night.   Beer and other vendors line the street, and the restaurants along this street, while crowded, provide good food and good atmosphere.  Bay Days is expected to attract over 200,000 people throughout the weekend, so expect a good atmosphere, lots of fun, and big crowds in the bleachers by the dock.

Location:  600 Settlers Landing Road, Hampton, VA 23666

Coming from Newport News (those staying at La Quinta) Take Settlers Landing exit, right at light, it's right by the giant glass wall building on the left just over the bridge.

Coming from Va Beach:  Take the Woodland Drive exit, left at light, it's right by the giant glass building on the left just over the bridge.

Parking and Drop Off:   Parking is located throughout downtown Hampton and much of it, including the Garage indicated above will be free, but are first come first served.   Many businesses down Settler's Landing Road and side streets will also offer their lots for parking, typically around $5/day.  This is a downtown festival with crowds increasing throughout the afternoon so the earlier you arrive, the closer/easier you will find a spot.   As for Drop off, there will be two locations for competitors to drop off their gear close to Dog Town.   The corner of Rudd Lane and King Street is one, and 700 Settlers Landing Road in front of the Crowne Plaza banquet area (not the circular registration area) is another.  Thanks for Amory Seafood and Crowne Plaza for providing these areas, but these are working businesses, open throughout the weekend, so please be as efficient as possible in getting your gear out of your car and your car out of the spots.  Tidewater Dockdog's personnel will assist anyway possible to watch after your stuff while you find a place to park.

Dock Location:  The dock will be located on King Street, next to the Air and Space Center and the Country's Longest continuous running Carousel.  There will also be a lot of kid's attractions in this area, so expect a big crowd of folks watching all weekend.  The backdrop of the Air and Space Center should be great for photos.  Speaking of the kids, they'll want to hang out in the Two Brother's Dog Wash Splash Zone along the dock where a good splash from a dog might be just the ticket to cool down on a hot day.

Dog Town:  Please note the map above for Dog Town's location, behind the Carousel.  It will all be on grass and spread out around the building.  There should be room for quite a few EZ Ups all along the borders, some with great views of the water.  Registration is high for this event so please share if possible and we'll figure out what to do if room runs short.  We realize this space may limit your view of the dock from your EZ Up, but in turn it should provide the dogs some rest from the crowds and we are accommodating the event's request to be at this location.   It should make for a nice relaxed community for dog town.  There are numerous grassy areas close by to walk your dog, as always, picking up after your dog is REQUIRED; failure to do so could result in your being asked to leave the event.  Security is provided by the event so you can leave your coolers, EZ Ups, Crates, etc. at the event, however, Tidewater Dockdogs, Bay Days, and the City of Hampton take no responsibility for lost or damaged items.

Food:  The Carousel Courtyard will have  food vendors, as well as a Starbucks located very close to dogtown and the pool.  Additional food vendors will be lined on Queen Street, as well as the restaurants listed there.  Away from the event, the corner of Mercury Blvd and Coliseum Drive in Hampton should provide for any type of fare you like close to the La Quinta.   Surf Rider is a local favorite seafood restaurant, located near the event, at 1 Marina Drive, but expect crowds.

Other Accommodations:  Portable toilets will be located throughout the festival, some close by our competition area.  Other vendors will line Queen Street, Wine Street, and Eaton Street selling various local arts and crafts and other items.  The area around the dock and courtyard allows dogs, but they are not allowed in all other areas of the festival. As always, just be a responsible dog owner, keep an eye on your dog and if someone asks you in the other areas to not have a pet, please be respectful.

Twobrothers Dogwash Jump for the Cup:  Tidewater Dockdogs is hosting a three year competitive cup, which takes up to 4 scores from each year, totals them, and the three year winner will receive a Cup, a custom Super Fly Suit, and $1000 cash.   Every competing team is automatically entered by being in just 1 wave.  To maximize your score, 4 waves is recommended (Big Air, Extreme Vertical, or Speed Retrieve count) but if you are competing, you are entered.  Just do your best and the points take care of themselves.  Full rules are listed below.

SWAG:  In addition to cash prizes, ribbons, and the Jump for the Cup year 2 Prizes, each competitor will receive a Summer Splashdown T-Shirt, compliments of Shipps Corner Pet Spa, Dockdogs Sanctioned Training Facility in Virginia Beach.   Additionally, PhotosbyFeist will be providing a complimentary 4x6 print of every Dog competing real time during the event.  This year, 6 lucky contestants will also receive at random, a certificate for a complimentary Super Fly Suit.  If you are entered in a wave to compete, you are in the drawing, done at random, throughout the weekend.

As stated before, this is our 2nd year, of three, at this venue.  Tidewater Dockdogs has worked tirelessly to come up with a great event and the best set up possible.  We welcome everyone to Summer Splashdown at Bay Days and hope everyone has a fantastic time.  We are happy to have every one of your joining us.

Sincerely,

Tidewater Dockdogs

Scoring:

General Scoring

Competitors will receive scores in three main areas:

  1. Wave Scores for overall participation, consistency, and improvement. Competitors will receive a score for every wave they participate in for Big Air, Extreme Vertical, and Speed Retrieve.  The four highest wave scores per year will count towards your Jump for the Cup total.

  2. Bonus Points for wave performance and placement.  All bonus points accumulate throughout the entire three years of competition.  All wave bonus points earned will count toward your total.

  3. Finals Bonus Points for performance during the finals round of competition.  Finals bonus points will accumulate through all three years of competition.

Bonus Points are designed to reward teams’ performance against their peers in individual waves.  They will be based on placement within your Big Air or Speed Retrieve division to reward competitors for outstanding performance.  Any bonus points earned for a wave throughout the competition will count towards the total for the Cup, even if that wave is not one of the competitors’ highest 4 wave scores.  There is no maximum number of waves from which a competitor may accrue Bonus points.

Miscellaneous Bonus Points can also be earned by competitors, examples of which are listed in the table below.

At the conclusion of the third year of competition, the cumulative score for each team will be tabulated (Wave Scores + Bonus Points + Finals Points). In the event of a tie at the conclusion of each year, the following cumulative scores will be considered, in order, to break the tie:

1st:  The team with the most Finals Points

2nd:  The team with the highest Individual Year Total (wave scores +Bonus Points)

3rd:  The team with the most  Bonus Points

Big Air Scoring

Big Air Wave Score:
The Big Air Wave Score will consist of totaling all official wave scores jumped during each year, and dividing by total # of waves competed in to obtain a team’s “Average Wave Distance”.  A competitor’s biggest jump per wave will be divided by their “Average Wave Distance”, and multiplied by 100 to obtain an “Individual Wave Score”. If a team does not receive an official score for a wave, that score will not be tabulated into the “Average Wave Distance” score. (i.e. dog fails to jump in alloted time, dog uses ramp, etc.).

Example

Tom & Fluffy compete in 3 Big Air Waves. Their official scores for each wave are:

Wave #1

Wave #2

Wave #3

15 ft. 0 inches

14 ft. 0 inches

16 ft. 0 inches

The “Individual Wave Score” is calculated as follows:

Average Wave Distance    = Sum of Official Scores / # of waves
= (15 ft. 0 inches + 14ft. 0 inches + 16 ft. 0 inches)=45ft/3 waves
= 15 ft. 0 inches per wave

Individual Wave Score for Wave #1 = (15 ft. 0 inches / 15 ft. 0 inches) x 100 = 100 points
Individual Wave Score for Wave #2 = (14 ft. 0 inches / 15 ft. 0 inches) x 100 = 93.3 points
Individual Wave Score for Wave #3 = (16 ft. 0 inches / 15 ft. 0 inches) x 100 = 106.7 points

A Total Big Air “Wave Score” of 300 points would be awarded for the weekend
